PMI testing steel: positive material identification checks the grade of steel on the spot. We use a mobile handheld PMI spectrometer to confirm alloy content on ingots, billets and bars before dispatch, and an optical emission spectrometer in the laboratory for full chemical analysis.
Ultrasonic testing steel finds internal defects without cutting the material. We use a digital ultrasonic flaw detector; rolled bars are 100 % ultrasonically tested to ASTM standard (see rolled bars). Ultrasonic testing of steel forgings and forging ingots is available with the digital flaw detector, together with radiation testing for radioactive contamination.
