SAE 1010 carbon steel

Introduction

We manufacture forging ingots, billets, and blooms in carbon steel specifically for SAE 1010, designed for very low carbon applications where excellent ductility, formability, and weldability are required.

SAE 1010 is a very low carbon, unalloyed steel with approximately 0.08% to 0.13% carbon content. It offers exceptional ductility and high machinability, making it ideal for deep drawing, forming, and fabrication in automotive, agricultural, and general engineering applications with low mechanical loads.

Chemical composition

Element Content (%) Function / effect
Carbon (c) 0.08 – 0.13 Provides very low strength but excellent ductility and formability
Manganese (mn) 0.30 – 0.60 Improves toughness and machinability
Phosphorus (p) 0.040 max Controlled to prevent brittleness
Sulphur (s) 0.050 max Improves machinability when controlled
Silicon (si) 0.10 – 0.30 Acts as deoxidizer and improves strength
Chromium (cr) Nil Not intentionally added
Nickel (ni) Nil Not present
Molybdenum (mo) Nil Not present
Other elements No significant alloying additions

Mechanical properties (typical – annealed / normalized condition)

  • Tensile strength: 350 – 450 MPa
