C-10 carbon steel

Introduction

We manufacture forging ingots, billets, and blooms in carbon steel specifically for C-10, designed for very low strength engineering applications where exceptional formability, weldability, and surface finish are required.

C-10 is a very low carbon, unalloyed steel that provides excellent ductility, softness, and ease of fabrication. Due to its very low carbon content, this grade exhibits minimal hardenability and is ideal for cold forming, deep drawing, and welding operations.

This grade is widely used in applications where high strength is not required but consistent quality, easy processing, and cost-effectiveness are critical.

Chemical composition

Element Content (%) Function / effect
Carbon (c) 0.08 – 0.12 Ensures softness, high ductility, and excellent formability
Manganese (mn) 0.25 – 0.50 Improves toughness and machinability
Sulphur (s) 0.050 max Controlled to maintain toughness
Phosphorus (p) 0.050 max Limited to avoid brittleness
Silicon (si) 0.05 – 0.30 Acts as deoxidizer and improves strength
Chromium (cr) Nil Not intentionally added
Nickel (ni) Nil Not present
Molybdenum (mo) Nil Not present
Other elements No significant alloying additions

Mechanical properties (typical – annealed / normalized condition)

  • Tensile strength: 320 – 400 MPa
  • Yield strength: 180 – 230 MPa
  • Elongation: 30 – 35 %
  • Hardness: 100 – 140 HB

Heat treatment

  • Annealing: improves softness and formability
  • Normalizing: provides uniform grain structure
  • Case hardening: highly suitable for surface hardening
  • Quenching & tempering: not applicable due to very low carbon content

Key features and benefits
