C65 carbon steel

Introduction

We manufacture forging ingots, billets, and blooms in carbon steel specifically for C65, designed for high strength and high wear resistance engineering applications. C65 is a high carbon, unalloyed steel grade known for its excellent hardness, superior wear resistance, and good edge-holding capability after heat treatment. Due to its high carbon content, C65 is ideally suited for applications where surface hardness and abrasion resistance are critical.

C65 exhibits excellent response to quenching and tempering, resulting in high hardness levels. While its machinability is lower than medium carbon steels, it provides outstanding performance in wear-intensive and load-bearing components. C65 is widely used in tooling, automotive, and general engineering applications where durability and long service life are required.

Chemical composition

Manganese (Mn) 0.60 - 0.90 Improves hardenability and toughness
Silicon (si) 0.15 - 0.35 Increases strength and acts as deoxidizer
Phosphorus (p) Max 0.050 Impurity; limited to maintain toughness
Sulphur (s) Max 0.050 Improves machinability when controlled
Chromium (cr) Nil Not intentionally added
Nickel (ni) Nil Not present
Molybdenum (mo) Nil Not present
Other elements No significant alloying additions

Mechanical properties

(Properties may vary depending on section size and heat treatment conditions)

  • Tensile strength: 700 - 900 MPa
  • Yield strength: 450 - 650 MPa
  • Hardness: 250 - 300 HB (up to ~50–55 hrc after hardening)
  • Impact toughness: moderate
  • Wear resistance: very high

Heat treatment

  • annealing: performed to soften the steel and improve machinability prior to final machining.
  • normalizing: refines grain structure and improves structural uniformity.
  • quenching: heating to approximately 800 - 840°c followed by oil or water quenching to achieve very high hardness.
  • tempering: carried out at controlled temperatures to reduce brittleness and achieve the required balance between hardness and toughness.

Proper heat treatment is essential for C65 to maximize hardness while controlling brittleness.
